This week we begin a month long emphasis upon prayer. We are doing so because the latest statistics that I could find report that only about 10% of Christians pray regularly. In thinking about that I really believe that most don’t pray because most don’t really believe it makes a difference.
I mean why would I waste my time doing something if I thought it was only ritual? I am a busy person with things to do and desires that I want to fulfill. I don’t have TIME to just sit and pray, especially if I don’t think it makes any difference.
So what do you think? Is it a waste of time or does it actually do something?
I grew up in a pretty fundamental and conservative church that taught me to distrust any other believer, unless they were part of our denomination. Apparently, all the other so called Christians were all going to hell and it was up to me to show them the “right” way. As you can imagine this did not go over well but I was also taught that this “persecution” by other churches was an attempt by Satan to discourage me.
As I went through my college years and entered into adulthood, I started learning about other churches and checking them out. Pentecostal, fundamental, independent, Baptist, etc… The more I studied them the more I found that each one seemed to emphasis “something” that was essential to the faith. (Apparently, no one had it all right).
It seemed to be a mess and I could imagine what those with no faith saw when they looked at all the so called Christians “fighting.”
I am part of the Disciples because I believe we all need to be in conversation and allow Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, to be our teacher. If you are looking for such a place…come on over.
At DCC…there is always a place for you!
